During an interview with the Russian media group Rossiya Segodnya, President Vladimir Putin expressed his views on the tensions with France regarding the geopolitical situation in Africa, particularly in the Sahel region. Putin confidently addressed the growing anti-France sentiment in the African region and made it clear that Moscow was not responsible for it.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that French President Emmanuel Macron's vocal opposition to the war in Ukraine is due to an "emotional" reaction, as certain French-speaking African countries are increasingly turning towards Russia. Putin stated that the problem between France and Russia is not in Ukraine, but rather with the "well-known Wagner group." He further added that France is upset because Russia is "stepping on its tail" in Africa, which has led to some kind of resentment. Putin also mentioned that leaders of some African countries prefer to negotiate with Russian businessmen and somehow do not want to work with the French. He stressed that Russia does not intend to pit anyone against France
