Ryland Fisher embraces an unspoken tragedy on ‘Fifth Half Full.’ First of all, to finish half a fifth, one must be enduring a great deal of inner turmoil and that is once again articulated in Ryland’s distinct, raw fashion. The arrangement adds to that bleary sensibility. Like trying to forget a terrible memory, the song’s sorrow proves to be palpable. Guitars weave themselves together, the electric intertwined with an acoustic. His voice has a determination to it that wants to overcome the heartache, yet it still feels just a bit too soon. Hurt works in that way- with the passage of time the only tried and trusted remedy to loss, however it may have happened.
"FIFTH HALF FULL" LYRICS
Three weeks and thirteen days
And my heart's still finding new ways to break
And that Florida magnet’s still holding onto your picture
Like that’ll bring ya back
Still smell your perfume on the sheets
Head spinning staring up at the ceiling
By 2am, I’m up again
Drowning in the bottom of a whiskey glass
But I got a fifth half full
And another night to kill your memory
I try to blame you
But God knows I’m my own worst enemy
Could put it on ice, save it for a rainy day
Without you, where would that get me?
I'd still have a fifth half full
And a heart half empty
Stopped leaving that porch light on
In case you came walking back through the door
Stopped checking my phone every time that it lights up
Like it’s you saying goodnight
Just taking it one day at a time
A little more living, a little less rewind
Learning to let you go
And finding a little hope in a
Fifth half full
Could waste another night killing your memory
I try to blame you
God knows I been my own worst enemy
I’ll put it on ice, save it for a rainy day
Without you, the last thing I need is a fifth half full...
So I’ll pour one more round
Before I pour it down
Baby, here’s to you…
I got a fifth half full
Ain't wasting one more night killing your memory
I can try to blame you
God knows I been my own worst enemy
I could put it on ice, save it for a rainy day
But without you, I’m starting to see
I gotta fifth half full
And a heart a little less empty
