On July 3, 1929, the Detroit police discovered a scene of unimaginable horror at the home of Benny Evangelista, a man whose life was steeped in the occult. Evangelista, a self-proclaimed divine prophet, was found decapitated in his office, his head surrounded by eerie photographs of his deceased son. Upstairs, his wife Santina and their four children lay slain, their bodies bearing the marks of a frenzied and ritualistic attack. The Detroit Occult murders remain one of history’s most haunting unsolved mysteries.

Born in Naples, Italy, Benny Evangelista emigrated to America in 1904, where his fascination with mysticism and the occult grew. Settling in Detroit, he became a faith healer and occult practitioner, attracting many followers and establishing a cult known as the Union Federation of America. He frequently practiced rituals in exploration of the paranormal. His basement was transformed into a bizarre altar room, filled with grotesque idols and an electrically wired sun, all part of his "Great Celestial Planet Exhibition."
The investigation into the Evangelista murders was one of the most intensive in Detroit's history. The police interviewed over 150 suspects, including tenants, neighbors, and associates. The potential involvement of the notorious Black Hand, a criminal organization known for extortion and violence, was explored, but no concrete evidence linked them to the crime. Theories also pointed to Robert Harris, leader of a rival cult, and Umberto Tecchio, a man with a violent past who had visited Evangelista the day before the murders.
One of the most chilling suspects was Aurelius Angelino, a former close friend of Evangelista, who had escaped from an insane asylum after committing similar brutal murders. The eerie similarities between the two men's crimes and their deep involvement in the occult led investigators to speculate that Angelino might have tracked down his old friend to exact a horrific revenge. Some even theorized that Evangelista and Angelino could have been the same person, bound by dark rituals and a twisted fate.
The aftermath left the Detroit community in fear and mourning. The Evangelista family was laid to rest in a funeral attended by thousands, but the true crime mystery remains unsolved to this day. The shadows of the Detroit Occult Murders vanish as soon as they're pursued, leaving behind a haunting legacy that continues to captivate and terrify.
