The construction method for the foundations is using is called a waffle pod, where polystyrene is used to reduce the amount of concrete used for the foundation. This also is meant to provide extra insulation.
These days all the volume builders use this for their concrete slab foundations to save on costs and time.
Certainly this video shows the time it takes to layout the waffles. Even when delivered, one man carried them in by themselves in bundles.
