Sarajevo is probably one of the most underestimated cities in Europe. Marked by its sad history, Sarajevo is a true testimony of the last centuries. But that is exactly why the city is today one of the most impressive cultural assets of the Balkan region. Let me guide you through Sarajevo and its history and find out why the city is a real insider tip.
Despite its proximity to popular resorts like Dubrovnik and Split, Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of those countries that is only gradually becoming a popular tourist destination. Good for you, because Bosnia's capital Sarajevo is a real insider tip. Shaped by its history and several hostile takeovers in the last centuries, Sarajevo is a city with a moving past. And yet one of the most tolerant in all of Europe - hardly any other city combines Eastern and Western values in such a peaceful and impressive way as Sarajevo. As the seat of government of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the capital, which is home to just under 300,000 inhabitants, has been developing into an up-and-coming city in recent years.
Sarajevo's history
In the last centuries Sarajevo had to experience a lot. In the course of time, the city was repeatedly hit by takeovers and today convinces with its multifaceted character. Once founded as a Slavic settlement, Sarajevo developed into a part of the Ottoman Empire, later became part of Austria-Hungary, was in socialist hands after the Second World War and is today a democratic country. The city gained notoriety in 1914 for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. The heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, for whom the bridge of Mostar had previously been laid out with hand-knotted carpets, died as a result of the planned assassination in Sarajevo. This event is considered to be the trigger of the First World War.
After the Second World War, Sarajevo became part of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Influences of this period can still be seen in the buildings of the city. In 1984, Sarajevo and the country experienced a real boom - as host of the Winter Olympics, the eyes wandered to Bosnia and Herzegovina and brought new opportunities to the country.
During the Bosnian War, Sarajevo eventually faced a four-year siege. Even today, countless scars of this period can be found in the city, reminding us of the dark days of the past. Nevertheless, Sarajevo has changed greatly since the end of the war in 1995. Today, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a safe country. People still remember the past times and have made Sarajevo a city that is haunting and close to the border of old memory and new awakening.
Sarajevo Tunnel and Latin Bridge
The Sarajevo Tunnel, which served as a transport route for food, medicine, weapons, fuel and also injured people during the siege, can be visited today. From the house of the Kolar family you can walk a part of the tunnel and get an impression of what life must have been like there at that time. The Latin Bridge also has a dark history: the beautiful stone bridge was the scene of the assassination attempt on Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
The nature of Sarajevo
Just outside the city, the Yellow Bastion, Žuta Tabija, watches over the hilly landscape. Here you have a fabulous view over the city. In the evening, many locals and tourists gather to enjoy the sunset. Only a few hundred meters away you can explore the ruins of the white fortress Bijela Tabija.
