What's the difference between the roles of Protestant pastors and Catholic priests? There are many different understandings out there, but as a Christian Reformed minister, Dr. John Bergsma saw as his primary job the preaching of Scripture and the final say in administrative matters related to his congregation. As he gravitated toward Catholicism, however, he saw that the priesthood entailed those things, but also much more due to the sacramental nature of Catholic worship.
When he entered the Catholic Church, Dr. Bergsma still felt a call to that teaching ministry, but not to the sacramental priesthood. Now, as a professor of Scripture at a Catholic university, he continues to open and teach the Word of God to students from a variety of backgrounds, even to those studying for the priesthood!
