This is the 3rd episode of No Budget Films' 2nd season of its Byzantine history audio epics "The Last Roman Dynasty", a direct sequel to the 2020 NBF Byzantine history 3 episode audio epic series "The 57 Years: Byzantium in Exile". This series now centers on the last dynasty of the Byzantine Empire, the Palaiologos Dynasty beginning with its founder Michael VIII Palaiologos and ending in 1453 with the fall of the Byzantine Empire. The series' title refers to the Byzantine Empire as the direct continuation of the old Roman Empire except this time based in Constantinople as the "New Rome".
This episode (Episode III) begins after the death of the Palaiologos Dynasty's founder Michael VIII and the ascension of his son Andronikos II as Byzantine emperor in 1282 where the last episode had left off. Andronikos II has a promising start as the empire he inherited from his father has been spared from the threat of the west as Charles of Anjou, the French King of Sicily that had troubled the restored Byzantium has been dealt with together with his army, and now the rising kingdom of Aragon in Spain as an ally of the Byzantines now occupy Sicily. Andronikos II also begins his reign well as when coming to the Byzantine throne, he cancels his father's infamous and unpopular Church Union returning his empire to Orthodoxy again and making his people happy but on the negative side, Andronikos II also inherits and almost bankrupt empire as his father had spent almost all of the treasury on foreign wars and making alliances. As an artist and intellectual and not a tough soldier-politician emperor the way his father Michael VIII was, Andronikos II came to the throne at a wrong time as even though the empire was spared from external threats, it now had a damaged economy that would take so much to rebuild it and for Andronikos, his only solution to keep his empire's economy still running is to disband the army and navy, instead resorting to hiring foreign mercenaries to fight his wars. His decision to disband the army and navy too came at such a bad time as by 1299, the new power of the Turkish Beylik of Osman later the Ottoman Empire had risen and immediately posed a threat to the dying Byzantine Empire. In his reign, Andronikos II would face the unexpected rise of the Ottomans from a small Turkish state in Asia Minor to the dominant power of Asia Minor, the inevitable collapse of Byzantine rule in their heartland being Asia Minor, a great number of military defeats, and the betrayal of the Catalan army he hired that was even more devastating than the rising threat of the Ottomans. With all these problems of war and political infighting surrounding him, Andronikos II as an inept leader instead put his attention to promoting art and learning in the Byzantine capital Constantinople.
This audio epic is a work of historical fiction which tells a true story set from the 13th-14th centuries, though in the No Budget Films perspective. Keep in mind that this video contains some references that could be culturally offensive to some. It consists of mixed media including No Budget Films' Lego characters, photographs of real locations, historical illustrations, and artworks from various online artists.
