I’ve made this video about various types of books for one-year-olds. It is a good starting point to learn about different options and then to choose what works best for you and your child.
In this video I mention books that help developing:
- fine motor skills
- sensory and visual skills
- imagination
- as well as learning new words. And ultimately it all contributes to early brain development
Cheers and see you soon!

Hi guys, this is Maria. Great to see you. Today I will talk about various types of books for one-year-olds. The first type of books I'm going to mention are the books that help to develop fine motor skills. Fine motor skills are small movements like finger movements or hand movements and eye movements and the coordination between them. They are very important and in early child development. Fine motor skills are very much connected with brain development. So the books I'm going to mention are the sticker books. One of the examples could be this book. This book has 400 stickers and it has different pictures so you can for instance assemble a butterfly or some animal. We’ve done a few things here, we've taken the stickers from this page and then we put them on this page. So obviously when a child is only one year old or one and a half years old they can't really put together pictures from the stickers. But the most important thing is that they would take the sticker, they would hold it in the hand with their fingers. It will stick to their fingers, then they would need to use another hand to take it and that's what really helps the brain development. So take a look at sticker books. There are plenty of them and you can find a book that that you really like. The next type of books I am going to mention are the word books. These are the books where you have a picture and a word next to it. And for me the most important thing is that the pictures are real and the child can ultimately recognise what what it is. One of the best books I've ever came across is a book written in 1960s and it's been one of the most popular books until now. This book is called “Best word book ever”. I find the “Best word book ever” just great. There are different pictures there and these pictures do resemble things and objects in real life. And what's important is that these pictures and the words in this book are very useful. These are the words that children need to learn as they grow. I'll try to avoid the books with words which just are not really necessary. The third type of books which are very important are the sensory books. The sensory books have different surfaces and the child can touch different surfaces and understand the difference between them. I think the best type of sensory books are the books where the surfaces are associated with the picture they represent. For instance look at this book- so we've got the Sheep here and then there's sheep’s fur here. Obviously it is not natural but it does resemble the real sheep. Or the next one, we've got the cat here and there's cat's fur and the child can touch the surface and then they can understand that the cat might feel this way. Okay the forth and very important type of books are the music books or books with different sounds. These are the books where you would have a picture and then your child can press a button and then the music starts. So amongst these books I would choose a book where you would have a classical music sound as opposed to as opposed to the sound of disco from the 90s. And I would try to find a book where you would have sounds associated with with real life. For instance we bought this book in the London Zoo. It has different pictures of animals and birds and you can press a button and then you will have you will have a sound associated with this animal this bird and it's a very good start for a child to learn about real world. Okay in the final type of books are the art books. I do find it ver important that the child looks at different colors and shapes. It does help in early education and obviously it develops a taste for arts. And there are various types of art books for children like for instance we've got this book which is based on Matisse paintings and it has different shapes and colors and our child really likes it. But what I find important is not only you know these types of baby art books but you can just take a book of paintings, let say some collection of paintings from an art gallery, and then you can just show this book to your child. For instance we've got this book of Sorolla. He is one of my favorite Spanish painters and we show from time to time this book and different paintings to our child. So to summarize in this video we reviewed five types of books. My next video will be about British Children’s Classic Books for one and two-year-olds. Stay tuned and see you soon.
