I discuss the long term issues that were plaguing the Eastern Roman Empire in the run up to the Foruth Crusade. Many of these issues occurred during or because of the Komnenian era but were managable and reversible by the death of Manuel I Komnenos. However, the combination of these problems and the incompetence of the emperor's that followed Manuel I brought their empire to ruin.
