Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) is a type of bacteria that is naturally found in the human body and is considered a "good" bacteria. It is a member of the Lactobacillus genus of bacteria and is also known as acidophilus. L. acidophilus is a slender rod with a circular end that measures 2–10 μm long and is microaerobic, meaning it grows better in anaerobic environments.
It is responsible for the souring of milk and can be found in milk and foods made from milk, as well as in the intestinal tracts and vaginas of adults and in the intestinal tracts of babies fed with formula.
L. acidophilus produces lactic acid by breaking down carbohydrates through an enzyme called lactase, which breaks down lactose, a sugar found in milk. It has many functional roles in different physiological and pathological processes, including:
Intestinal tract: L. acidophilus produces metabolites and regulates intestinal microbiota, which can help reduce intestinal pH and balance intestinal flora.
Immune system: L. acidophilus helps support the immune system.
L. acidophilus has been used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including:
Diarrhea, Vaginal yeast infections, Lactose intolerance, Cholesterol levels, Colon cancer, Gastrointestinal ulcers, Human papillomavirus infection, Digestive issues, Eczema, and Bacterial vaginosis.
L. acidophilus can be found in fermented foods, yogurt, and supplements. Adults can take L. acidophilus by mouth, alone or together with other probiotics, in doses of up to 60 billion CFUs daily for up to 6 months. Children can take it in doses of up to 30 billion CFUs daily, for up to 3 months.
However, you should only take dietary supplements under the supervision of a knowledgeable health care provider, as antibiotics may kill acidophilus bacteria. Potential side effects of L. acidophilus include gas, upset stomach, and diarrhea.
