I recently published a video in which I objected to statistics published by my tory MP, Mark Jenkinson which he used to claim that Cumbria had received more funding from central government to deal with coronavirus than Surrey. This was extremely surprising and so I did my own number crunch and determined that in fact we had done far less well than the home counties. Unfortunately for me, whilst my figures were correct my terms of reference were not.
I had assumed that the local council figures had been subsumed into the county council figures and so omitted them from my calculations. I simply took the figure he presented for Surrey as accurate without being able to see how he’d arrived at it and then merrily went ahead and did what I thought was the same calculation for Cumbria.
The result was a chalk and cheese comparison, something I counselled against doing in the same video, ironically enough.
