(11 May 2020) A group of 80 mostly female care worker from Romania arrived in the Austrian capital on Monday on a chartered train.
The workers, who are particularly needed to care for elderly people who require around the clock attention, first have to stay at a hotel where they are being tested for COVID-19.
They are then due to travel to various destinations in Austria, provided the tests come back negative.
Austrian EU minister Karoline Edstadler said that weeks of negotiations and the bureaucratic process necessary to bring in workers had been time-consuming, but that she was confident that it met demand and that "this opportunity will be used."
Many care workers who have been stuck in Austria for weeks can now take this train to go back to Romania.
Another train bringing more workers to Austria is expected for Thursday.
According to the Johns Hopkins University, Austria has more than 15,800 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 618 deaths, while Romania has more than 15,300 confirmed infections and 961 deaths.
For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks.
But it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death for some people, especially older adults and people with existing health problems.
