To test your Freeze Miser, at room temperature look to see that the valve rod is visible at the top - this is the closed position. Then place the Freeze Miser in the freezer for several hours.
Once frozen, remove it from the freezer and verify that the valve rod has receded - it is now in the open position. Install it on your outdoor faucet and turn the water on. You'll see that the water runs because the valve rod is fully open.
As the water runs through, it warms up the sensing element causing the valve rod to close and the water to shut off. When this happens, you know the Freeze Miser is working properly. It will let out just enough water needed to keep the faucet from freezing as temperatures drop.
