Basically folic acid is nothing but a vitamin in our body system it is called as Vitamin B9. Because of the poor dietary intake of the folic acid supplements, we have to take it in the form of tablets. The very important role that the folic acid plays is prevention of neural tube defects. That is basically abnormalities in the brain and the spinal cord. For the prevention it has to be started prior to planning conceiving starting 3 months prior and once you are onto your pregnancy, your doctor will ask you to continue it within your first 3 months of pregnancy, that is the first trimester. However we do not stop it. We continue it in the form or iron and folic acid supplements from thereon post-delivery and it has to be taken post delivery because it helps in the overall growth also maintaining the haemoglobin levels, maintaining good RBC’s in the body system. Folic acid has got several roles to play. Hence it doesn’t stop at any given stage of pregnancy. In fact there are several health supplements these days, which have these folic acids added in it. The minimum requirement is 400 micrograms and if that is taken then you can prevent your newborn from having several disorders which are preventable.
