There's a phenomena that can happen after stroke called "learned non-use." And I'll be honest, it's the most important thing to avoid in recovery if you're dealing with one-sided weakness.
Learned non-use is when you learn not to use your affected side. This can be detrimental because you're not signaling to your brain to prioritize neural pathways to that side of the body. It comes back to "Use it or lose it."
So what's the best way to combat learned non-use? Forced use! Even if you don't have full movement on your affected side, use it as often and as much as you can!
