A review and overview of a stunning Soviet film, the first of a series on the genre and the first of this channel.
Mikhail Kalatozov's The Cranes are Flying is a masterpiece of Soviet cinema and a Palme d'Or winner. An oustanding war drama that showcased the capacity for the Soviet Union to produce spectacular films that were not inferior to Hollywood productions. It features the expected photographic masterclass provided by the stellar collaboration with Sergei Urusevsky, and a memorable performance by Tatiana Samoilova as well, a few years before Andrei Tarkovsky debuted his also phenomenal WWII drama, Ivan's Childhood.
