This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In April 2009, Elke Barber was widowed suddenly and unexpectedly. Struggling to find a suitable book to help her explain death to her two young kids, she wrote her own, which she self-published in December 2012.
Elke Barber was born in Münster in July 1974. After her Abitur in 1993, she moved abroad, first to New York, where she worked as an Au Pair, then to the UK. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1999, with a First Class Honours Degree in Visual Communication. After working for a number of different design agencies within the UK, she set up her own business www.oneshoop.com in 2005. She got married and had her first child the same year. In April 2009, she was widowed suddenly and unexpectedly. Struggling to find a suitable book to help her explain death to her two young kids, she wrote her own, which she self-published in December 2012. Whilst working on “Is Daddy Coming Back in a Minute?”, she was diagnosed with a very aggressive breast cancer, and crowdfunded the project. She is currently all clear from cancer and lives with her soon-to-be husband and their seven children near Edinburgh. She is busy working on a second book “What Happened to Daddy’s Body?”, and continues to do odd design jobs whilst working from home and being a mum and step mum. She is happier now than she has ever been before, and urges you to live life with no regrets.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
