On this day in 1942 the 1st detachment of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps began basic training. Here Movietone reports on “Girls at War” in 1944.
In Italy, General Clark praises the work of women in the forces and presented two WAAC's with Campaign Medals. In America WAVES train men at the Naval Gunnery School. In Florida girls pose for the pin-up's which will be sent to camps and barracks all over the world.
Cut story - General Clark walks through ranks of paraded WAACS. CU of Clark making speech about people back home. Also at parade are ATS & French Waacs. Clark presents Campaign medals to two Waacs. GS of girls & troops (American) at mess collecting their food, GS of them eating same. CU of American WAAC. ATS, & French WAAC say what they think of the mess. During parade band can be heard playing. This was in Italy. At a Pacific Station. Army Nurses keep fit by doing physical training, seen in the fore is their daily washing. Nurses slip off skirts already in bathing costumes, entering sea (ocean). At American Naval Air Operational Gunnery School, WAVES instruct men on shooting, from gun turrets of bombers, various shots of same. At Cypress Gardens, Florida, various shots of pin-up girls posing for camera, seated on tree trunks, lying on branches, looking out to sea etc.
