Track 11 from their sixth album "Rattle and Hum" released in 1988 copyright Island Records. The double album was a combination of live performances, covers and new music, including some songs left over from the "Joshua Tree sessions. It was recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, the Point Depot concert hall in Dublin, Danesmoate House in Rathfarnham, Ireland, STS Studios in Dublin and A&M and Ocean Way Studios in Hollywood. A documentary concert film was produced to accompany the album. The band continued to write songs based on American roots music with additional elements. It featured collaborations with Bob Dylan, B.B. King and Harlem's New Voices of Freedom gospel choir. Jimi Hendrix' original version of the "Star Spangled Banner" recorded from his Woodstock performance is used as the intro for the live recording of "Bullet the Blue Sky" but said intro can't be posted on YouTube due to a copyright restriction. The album received mostly above average reviews but some criticized the band's choice to continue exploring roots music as they had on their previous album "The Joshua Tree" which was hugely successful. Their musical tributes to other artists were seen as pretentious and self-indulgent by some critics, while others raved about them. The album sold fourteen million copies worldwide and reached No. 72 in Spain, No. 47 in Italy, No. 34 in France and No. 2 in Sweden. It reached No. 1 in ten countries, including Australia, Austria, the Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, The U.K., Canada and the U.S. It achieved Gold status in seven, Platinum in six, 2X Platinum in Switzerland, 4X Platinum in the U.K., 5X Platinum in the U.S. and 7X Platinum in Australia and Canada. Love rescue me, come forth and speak to me
Raise me up and don't let me fall
No man is my enemy, my own hands imprison me
Love rescue me
Many strangers have I met on the road to my regret
Many lost who seek to find themselves in me
They ask me to reveal the very thoughts they would conceal
Love, rescue me
(And the sun in the sky makes a shadow of you and I)
(Stretchin' out as the sun sinks in the sea)
I'm here without a name in the palace of my shame
I said, love, rescue me
In the cold mirror of a glass I see my reflection pass
See the dark shades of what I used to be
See the purple of her eyes, the scarlet of my lies
(Love, rescue me)
Yeah, though I walk in the valley of the shadow
Yet, I will fear no evil
I have cursed thy rod and staff, they no longer comfort me
(Love, rescue me)
I said love, love, rescue me
I said love, whoa, as the mountains sit above
I said love, all my love is here
I been hearin' the song, I believe in the song
And I walk through the believin' door
I said love, rescue me
Oh, yeah, yeah, oh, yeah
Oh, yeah
Yeah, I'm here without a name in the palace of my shame
I said love, rescue me
I conquered my past, the future is here at last
I stand at the entrance to a new world I can see
The ruins to the right of me will soon have lost sight of me
Love, rescue me
