STORYLINE:
An attack on an Iraqi army convoy just outside of the Iraqi city of Fallujah killed four Iraqi soldiers and wounded 14 on Saturday, an army officer said.
Major Saleem Abdullah said an improvised explosive device exploded, creating a large crater. There were pools of blood nearby.
Elsewhere around the country on Saturday, a suicide bomber blew up a dynamite-laden truck in Ramadi, destroying a key bridge on a highway used by the departing US military. There were no casualties.
The highway links Iraq to neighbouring Syria and Jordan, where many Iraqis fled sectarian violence.
The Anbar provincial police commander told The Associated Press that he believed the blast was aimed at Iraqis. Traffic in and around Ramadi was backed up after the early morning explosion.
Western Anbar province was once a hotbed of Iraq's Sunni-dominated insurgency and the scene of some of the most intense US fighting with militants. Violence subsided significantly last year when local tribes decided to align themselves with US forces instead of al-Qaida.
Elsewhere in Iraq, violence has intensified.
The northern cities of Mosul and Kirkuk have recently been the scene of horrific attacks, targeting ethnic minorities and Iraqi security forces.
On Saturday, unknown attackers targeted an Iraqi army patrol near the Kirkuk, 180 miles (290 kilometres) north of Baghdad, killing two civilians, a police official in the oil-rich city said.
Two civilians were injured in the hand grenade attack that left the soldiers unharmed, he added.
In Mosul, 225 miles (360 kilometers) northwest of Baghdad, a policeman was killed and three bystanders were wounded when gunmen attacked the uniformed policeman Saturday, police in the Iraq's northern city said.
In a brazen attack on Friday, a suicide bomber, hiding with a rifle and explosives among the Sunni congregation in a mosque, sprayed gunfire at Muslim worshippers and then blew himself up, killing at least 15 people, including the imam leading prayers in the town of Tal Afar, near Mosul.
