A little look at Albert Square and Manchester Town Hall clock right in the heart of Manchester city centre on Monday 9th February 2015.
The square contains a number of monuments and statues, the largest of which is the Albert memorial.
It is dominated by its largest building, Manchester Town Hall Grade I, a Victorian Gothic building by Alfred Waterhouse. Work on the town hall began in 1868 and completed in 1877.
In the early 1970s, there was a plan to build an underground station under Albert Square and neighbouring St Peter's Square, as part of the ill-fated Picc-Vic tunnel project. The project was eventually cancelled and the station was not built.
At the end of the video, the clock can be heard striking 6.00pm. The 280 feet tall clock tower, houses a carillon of 23 bells: 12 are hung for full circle change ringing and were manufactured by John Taylor Bellfounders. The clock was made by Gillett and Bland (predecessor of Gillett and Johnston) and was originally wound using hydraulic power supplied by Manchester Hydraulic Power. The clock bell first rang on New Year's Day 1879 but cracked and was replaced in 1882 and recast with all the bells in 1937. The clock face bears the inscription 'Teach us to number our Days' from Psalm 90:12. The hour bell known as 'Great Abel' was named after Abel Heywood and weighs 8 tons 2.5 cwt. It is inscribed with the initials AH for Abel Heywood and the Tennyson line 'Ring out the false, ring in the true'. This is the fourth largest clock bell in England and the pitch is F#.
