The refugee crisis around the world has only gotten worse. In such a short time, the number of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDP) has skyrocketed from 82.4 million at the end of 2020 to 84 million in mid-2021. Of those, 35 million are children.
And the conflict in Ukraine has exacerbated the problem. With 3.6 million people displaced in the first 27 days of the crisis, it’s now known as one of the fastest-growing refugee emergencies on record.
The refugee crisis is a complex one. Who exactly is a refugee? What drives the refugee crisis around the world? What’s the best way to address the situation, both in the short and long term? What can Canadians do to help?
Mirette Bahgat, Child Protection Specialist at World Vision Canada, will unpack these questions for us. Drawing from years of working with refugees in various countries—most recently Romania and Moldova—Mirette will also debunk some of the misconceptions people commonly have about refugees.
