Unterschächen lies in the rear part of the Urner Schächental in the canton of Uri. In the north, the Schächentaler Windgellen (2622 m above sea level), in the east the Klausenpass and in the south Gross Windgallen (3187 m above sea level), the Ruchen and the Schärhörner form striking municipal boundaries.
Alp Aesch, with the romantic, 100-meter-high Stäuben waterfall, is one of the Urnerland's greatest attractions.
The Brunnital is an approximately six kilometer long southern side valley of the Schächental in the Swiss canton of Uri.
The Hinter Schächen, also called Brunnibach, flows from Brunnialp.
The wild and romantic Brunnital is the ideal starting point for hikes and mountain tours. The southern end of the valley is formed by the Ruchennordwand, which is considered the largest contiguous limestone wall in Europe.
