In 1991, Soviet astronaut Sergei Krikalev was forgotten in space during a long-duration mission aboard the Mir Space Station. He was the flight engineer for the mission, and had already spent 10 months in space when the collapse of the Soviet Union occurred. As a result, his mission was extended for another four months, making him the astronaut who has spent the most consecutive days in space in history, some 311 days.
While in space, he saw significant changes on Earth, such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He also faced oxygen problems and failures in the life support system aboard the space station.
Still, the astronaut held his ground, and continued to work with his ground control team to keep the space station operating. He finally returned to Earth in March 1992, but his experience is remembered as an important milestone in the history of space exploration.
Sergei Krikalev is considered a hero of the Soviet Union and Russia. He served as a flight engineer on several other space missions, including a long-term mission to the International Space Station.
