In this video, Justin and I explore a large, modern silver - lead - zinc mine. The deposit exploited in this mine was originally discovered in the 1800's. Small mines were developed far up in the hills above the Cherokee Mine. Later on, the Cherokee adits were driven below the older workings from the 1800 and 1900's. It's unclear to me whether the workings connected, but both mines exploited the same ore bodies.
The primary drift in the Cherokee Mine runs for miles to the right off the main haulage adits. In this part, we only explore a very small fraction of this enormous mine. There also may be levels below the level we explore that are completely submerged in water. I have been unable to locate maps of this mine, so I cannot verify that this is correct.
The Cherokee Mine was only worked for a few years before being abandoned. The mine's ore was not profitable enough to sustain the large costs associated with mining it. The dump for the mine contains copious amounts of pyrite, sphalerite, and galena.
