This video delves into the first phase of the impact assessment process – planning. Learn more about how the planning phase sets impact assessments in the right direction and how you can participate.
Impact assessments help us understand the possible impacts of projects—like the building of mines, roads or dams— before they start. Assessments identify the best ways to avoid or reduce a project's negative impacts. They may also find ways to enhance the positive aspects of a project. Their goal is to inform decision-makers about project impacts and ensure the protection of people and the environment.
At the planning phase, public and Indigenous peoples are invited to provide information and contribute to planning the assessment.
Members of the public can identify important benefits of a project. They may also raise areas of concern related to a project. Further, the information provided by participants may help inform project design and lead to better outcomes.
Indigenous groups—First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities—are also key. They contribute expertise, knowledge and information on project impacts. They also speak to possible impacts on Indigenous communities and Aboriginal and Treaty rights, as well as means to mitigate these impacts.
