The guide to reducing the chances of contracting it is simple.

South Korea's health authority has urged the public to pay attention to personal hygiene and food intake as the number of patients suffering from food poisoning is likely to increase during the winter.

According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday,
the number of patients with confirmed norovirus infections increased by nearly 50-percent during the 4th week of November compared to the previous week.

Norovirus is transmitted through the feces or vomit of infected people, or through contaminated water or food.
Although severe illness is rare as norovirus infections generally only cause light symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, or fever,… according to research by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, norovirus is associated with an estimated nearly 220-thousand deaths a year in developing countries.

As the virus often occurs from November to April in Korea, the health authority has provided tips for preventing norovirus infections.

"To prevent norovirus infections, you should wash your hands more frequently,... for more than 30 seconds in running water,... and you should look after your personal hygiene by eating thoroughly cooked food and drinking boiled water."

Although having norovirus can be unpleasant, with the right treatment such as sanitizing the patient's home and belongings, a full recovery can be made within two to three days.
