Some memories of my many visits to Dresden (capital of Saxony) in East Germany. I also included a few photos from Pillnitz Park (in a suburb of Dresden) and Moritzburg (which is only 13 km distant, but not part of Dresden).
Dresden profits to this day from the reign of Augustus II. "the Strong" in the 18th century (who also ruled in Poland). He was focused on making Dresden the cultural beacon, invited artists, musicians, architects, and completely rebuilt Dresden in the baroque style. In World War II, Dresden suffered greatly from a bombing raid in February 1945, leaving the town in ruins.
It is admirable that despite this massive destruction, since 1945 over decades the main landmarks of Dresden have been rebuilt, with the completion of the Frauenkirche in 2005 as one of the most recent efforts.
Now, the oldtown of Dresden is one of the most attractive city centres in Germany, with the Zwinger (former palatial gardens), the baroque Hofkirche and Frauenkirche, the opera house (Semperoper) and the “Brühl’sche Terrasse“ (a walkway along the Elbe river, passing some of the most beautiful historic buildings in Dresden) all in close proximity.
In close proximity to Dresden, Pillnitz Palace and the moated castle Moitzburg are very picturesque daytrip destinations.
