Canon 5D Mark IV 4K Video Test
The wait is over. I finally received my new 5D Mark IV yesterday. 5D Mark III used to be my favorited camera. It was like an industry standard DSLR camera. I just love the Canon color. Even some of the corporate shoots now in 2016, the production companies still prefer me to shoot with the Canon. First of all, the new 5D Mark IV has a great solid build quality, feels really good in hands. The screen is super sharp, very easy to see to check focus (Wasn’t that easy for Sonys). And the dual pixel AF system is phenomenal. I simply just tap the focus, then it locks ini place. By the way, I shot the whole video with auto focus turn on.
So a lot of people disappointed the specs on the new 5D Mark IV? Such as heavy crop, and no focus peaking? But personally I don't see there is a problem. To be honest, I don't really care about the 1.74x crop factor! Even the FS7, FS5 and a7rII are already 1.5x to 1.64x cropped. I rather have 1 to 1 full pixel read out without aliasing and moire than throwing away the pixel to get full frame 4K.
The best thing I like from this 5D Mark IV is the color. I have switched over to Sony 2 years ago. But I personally think Canon still got slightly better colors and better skin tone. Also Canon is the only DSLR brand offering true DCI 4K in their DSLR lines. It means the 4K is 4096x2160. Unlike the other brands just standard UHD. And also the camera comes with 8 bit 4:2:2 color. There is none in the market offering 4:2:2 color on DSLRs over even mirrorless cameras. Even the Sony A7 series only have 4:2:0 color in 4K. Another thing I like from this camera is, I wouldn't have worry about overheating anymore, because the camera uses motion jpeg instead of H.264. Motion jpeg make 10 times less heat than H.264!! But the drawback was having such a big file and not edit friendly on a computer. unless you convert it onto ProRes.
