We are pleased to welcome back to Chicago a visually stunning paean to spiritual pilgrimage. A signature work of Taiwan's leading contemporary dance company, Songs of the Wanderers is inspired by Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha, asceticism and the quest for quietude. Artistic Director Lin Hwai-Min transforms ancient rites into mesmerizing dance theatre. Set to soulful Georgian folk songs, startlingly beautiful images are created through a blend of Eastern and Western dance styles, with absolute focus and control by the performers. The set is created from an astonishing three and a half tons of shimmering golden grains of rice that shower down on the stage throughout the piece. Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan's Songs of the Wanderers creates a world of intense reverence, distinctly Asian in its imagery yet with powerful relevance far beyond Asia.
Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan's performances of Songs of the Wanderers are a co-presentation of The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University and The Joffrey Ballet, with underwriting support from the Alphawood Foundation.
Additional funding provided by the Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation.
