After months of living in limbo in camps and shelters on the Greek island of Leros, refugees finally have a safe place to learn. The Leros Educational Space (Ledu) is a joint initiative between UNHCR and Save the Children and has been operating since November 2016.
An estimated 85% of all school-aged children on the island have already enrolled and refugees with a background in education also teach here. The project does not intend to replace formal education and UNHCR and its partners continue to advocate for the inclusion of refugees in formal schools.
