Inside Out 2 got fans buzzing about representation, but left many feeling frustrated with Pixar's lack thereof. When Riley meets the all-star hockey player Valentina "Val" Ortiz, her reactions seem like those of a teenager with a crush. Whether it's just platonic panic or perhaps panic, Riley's blushing and awkwardness around Val got people wondering if she might realize her queerness in the film. But alas, those hoping for an openly queer Pixar protagonist were let down. Inside Out 2, while still a joy to watch, doesn't break Pixar's streak of underwhelming representation, as seen in previous films. While the movie beautifully captures the complexities of adolescence and teenage friendships, it missed a golden opportunity to significantly boost Pixar's representation.
