When the nurses told Tshianzi that the DNA evidence taken from her after she had been raped would be destroyed after three months, the first thing she felt was defeat.
It took Tshianzi more than six months to come to terms with what had happened to her. Reporting a rape has no statute of limitations in South Africa. There is no need to destroy valuable evidence and we need to find a solution to assist rape crisis centres to send DNA evidence to the forensic labs if they have a shortage of storage space.
