“It’s a place where Jim and I really think there are more stories to be told,” Jon Landau told Insider of continuing "Alita: Battle Angel."

During a press day for the digital release of "Avatar: The Way of Water" at James Cameron and Lawrence Kasanoff's production studio, Lightstorm Entertainment, I had the chance to speak with Cameron's longtime producing partner, Jon Landau.
Lightstorm Entertainment contains its own museum featuring props from many of Cameron's movies ranging from "Terminator 2" and "Titanic" to "Avatar: The Way of Water" and "Alita: Battle Angel." I wasn't expecting to see some props from the 2019 film out on display. The film was famously a passion project of Cameron's, which was then directed by his friend Robert Rodriguez, starring Rosa Salazar in the leading role.
While discussing "The Way of Water," I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask Landau about "Alita" and the chances of whether or not we may ever see more from that world. It was originally envisioned as - at least - a trilogy. Back in 2020, I had the chance to speak to some of the film's VFX team. When I asked them about the chances of a sequel, they laughed and told me to talk to Disney. I figured Landau was the next best thing.
Coming off of a huge box-office win with "Avatar: The Way of Water," (it's now the third highest-grossing movie worldwide), I figured Landau and Cameron may have some sway at Disney to revisit the passion project. Cameron has now directed three of only six movies to cross $2 billion at the box office.

I wasn't sure if I'd hear anything from Landau, but was surprised when he said they weren't only speaking with director Robert Rodriguez, but also star Rosa Salazar. It finally feels like a return to this world is closer than we think. FWIW — I wish I asked a follow-up, but I was told I was only going to have about 5 minutes with Landau. A cool little piece of news to keep hope alive in the Alita Army.
I also have to mention that "Avatar: The Way of Water" will be available exclusively to purchase on digital March 28.
