There are a hundred types of digital transformation consultants. They all specialize in specific skill sets. Just like when you are building a house, you might require several consultants, such as the ones specializing in roofs, doors, windows, or foundations. Similarly, digital transformation consultants specialize in specific areas. Some consultants are going to be functional, while others might be functional.

Even among the functional consultants, you might have several different skill sets, such as consultants who have a deep background in supply chain vs. accounting. The technical consultants typically would have a software engineering background but would not have as much expertise with business processes or functions. Among technical consultants, you have consultants who might specialize in specific apps as well. The others might be experts at integration architecture, as well as integration technologies.

Once you figure out which skill sets you are going to need for your project, the next challenge that you are going to get is how to balance your internal skillsets vs external ones. And how you will set the expectations for all the parties involved. If your role is of the sponsor, you want to make sure that you have the right level of engagement with the team. But not to the extent that you are going to micromanage them. Having the right composition of the team will set you up for success with your digital transformation initiatives.
