Russian President Boris Yeltsin wound up his three-day visit to Rome on Wednesday (11/2) by witnessing the signing of a US$550 million investment deal by Italy's Fiat to build cars in Russia. The agreement between Fiat and Russian automaker Gaz makes Italy's biggest industrial group the first western carmaker to set up a production line in Russia. A second agreement signed in front of Yeltsin and Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi calls for Italy's ENI energy group and Russian gas producer Gazprom to set up five chemical facilities in a US$700 million project. ENI and Gazprom are also to forge a strategic alliance to find oil and gas in Russia and other countries, including what ENI called "promising deposits in the Astrakhan region." The deals put a crowning touch of success to Yeltsin's trip.
