This approach is very nice because you see the adriatic coastline with islands and beaches.

For the pilot it is challenging because it is not possible to fly a standard straight in final approach, guided by an instrument landing system (ILS). The reason are the mountains in close proximity to the threshold of runway 23. The straight final approach part for runway 23 is only about 1.3 miles long. (instrument approaches are usually 5 to 10 miles long).

Primary reference for the approach is the outside view of the pilot and not the instruments. Available approaches are: visual approach on prescribed tracks or a circling approach on prescribed tracks. Normally you are on your own, if you fly a visual approach. Here in Split it is mandatory to follow the instructions on the visual approach chart to make sure that you do not get to close the mountains.

If the weather is very good, ATC clears the pilots directly for a visual approach starting from the navigation waypoints LASUL or RORKA. If the weather is not that good, they will give you a VOR-approach. On a small island almost abeam the airport, there is the SPL-VOR (navigation fix) at which the instrument part terminates and you have to see the airport environment to start the circling procedure on prescribed tracks. Minimum decision altitude is 2040 feet and a visibilty of 2.4 kilometers.

If you have no visual contact at the VOR, you have to follow the missed approach procedure and leave the area, flying away from the mountains. If you still want to land at Split, you can try to fly the ILS (instrument landing system) approach to the opposite runway 05, 440 feet is the decision altitude and the required visibility only 1.0 kilometers. But this is only possible, if your airplane tailwind limit is not exceeded. Most of the large airplanes have a limit of 10 to 15 knots.
