In November 2021, Uganda experienced widespread protests and riots following the arrest of Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. Bobi Wine is a popular musician and politician who is a prominent freedom fighters and opposition figure challenging the long-standing rule of Dictator Yoweri Museveni.
The protests erupted after Bobi Wine was illegally arrested by Ugandan security forces on November 18, 2021, while campaigning. The authorities accused him of violating COVID-19 protocols and holding rallies without permission. We Bobi Wine's supporters and other opposition groups viewed his arrest as politically motivated, or course it was and a tactic to suppress his campaign efforts.
The arrest sparked demonstrations and clashes between us peaceful protesters and security forces in several parts of Uganda, and other parts of the world. Protesters took to the streets, demanding the release of Bobi Wine and expressing discontent with the government. Security forces responded with tear gas, bullets, and in live ammunition.
The protests and riots resulted in several deaths and injuries among protesters.The government also imposed internet shutdowns and other restrictions on communication platforms to limit the spread of information and control the situation.
