Why is South Africa the most unequal economy in the world?
For centuries, South Africa was a divided nation run by the white population. During colonialism and apartheid, most Black South Africans have been denied economic opportunities.
Apartheid, a system that enforced racial segregation, came to an end in the early 1990s. However, over 25 years on, the government is yet to put in place strict policies to redistribute wealth.
The World Inequality Lab says “There's no evidence that wealth inequality has decreased since the end of apartheid". The education system is still very poor for most South Africans, with many schools being overcrowded and even having no electricity.
The unemployment rate was over 34% at the end of last year and many black citizens still live in townships, underdeveloped urban areas which used to be reserved for non-whites.
These factors mean it's very difficult for many to find work, while the wealthy can afford a quality education and continue to get richer. In fact, just 3,500 adults own more than the poorest 32 million people in South Africa.
