In this video, I will show the explanation of how to remove the coolant and diesel filter, and also the place for engine pre-heater installation, in particular, on the Toyota RAV4 D-4D diesel engine.
Then you need to find the place for heater installation. Locate two hoses that go into the car heater and check the left one (to the heater) is connected to the turbocharger and the right one (from the heater) is connected to EGR. You will need to install the heater as low as possible into the left hose.
Toyota D-4D diesel engines are quite reliable and can be used for hundreds of thousands of kilometres. However, living in a cold environment the life of the engine can be shortened by cold weather and short trips. Even though it is not a problem to crank the engine down below -20C, it still helps to have a heater. I have been considering a few options such that Webasto and 220v electric coolant heater. The last works much better for me due to the fact that I have access to the power outlet and it takes only a few hours to install without considerable modification of the car. Depending on the engine specification, you can install it right before the pump between the engine and lower radiator hose. However, 1CD-FTV has thermostat right where the radiator hose connects to the engine, so it does not make sense to install it there. As a result, I chose to put it in the hose between the engine and car cabin heater that is located right beyond the turbine under diesel fuel and air filter. The manufacturer recommends using the heater for no more than 3 hours. Also, make sure that you drive the car for some time to exclude the air from the system.
Products that I bought:
1. 500W in-line heater with 16mm hose from Biltema: 38-824 [ Ссылка ]
2. 1.5m cable that goes under the hood from Biltema: 40-203 [ Ссылка ]
3. Outside 2.5m cable that connects to 220V outlet from Biltema: 40-200 [ Ссылка ]
4. 1m of 16mm hose from Biltema for car coolant: 52-508 [ Ссылка ]
5. 50cm bent 16mm hose from Biltema for car coolant: 52-503 [ Ссылка ]
6. Mounting bracket for a licence plate from Biltema: 38-786 [ Ссылка ]
Tools: 10-12mm wrench, WD-40, pliers, cross-slot screwdriver, plastic self-locking band, water pump pliers, cutting pliers, knife, 1L of spare red antifreeze, 2L bottle to collect coolant temporarily, bucket, 5-10ml of car oil, screws. I had to cut about 20-25cm long hoses both bent and straight to connect the heater.
This video is about 1CD-FTV common-rail diesel engine that is installed on many Toyota models: Avensis, RAV4, Corolla, Previa, etc.
