With David Hyman, professional tour guide. The old city of Jerusalem is unofficially divided into 4 sections, and even though they are not equal in size, they are still referred to as Quarters. This definition is very recent and was made by the British mandatory governors in the mid-twenties of the 20th century. The total population of the Old City is approximately 40,000 inhabitants, with only 10% jews living within the Jewish quarter. The minute you walk into the JQ you will notice that its buildings and streets have been renovated and refurbished, this happened after 1967 when Israel returned to the Old City after it was in Jordanian hands for 19 years. During the renovations of the JQ there was finally an opportunity to conduct major excavations, before the rebuilding of the homes. This excavation, under archaeologist Nahman Avigad, revealed some of the most beautiful and unique sites, and we will visit some of them on this video tour. The Cardo street as can be seen in the Madaba Map, the Broad Wall built by King Hezekiah. We will also visit the Hurva Courtyard and the Rothchild house in the plaza of the "homes for the poor". All the sites in this tour can be accessed easily at all times, and no admission fee is required. I hope you all enjoy this tour.
