Welcome To The Video Of Today - Visiting Eastbourne - Sussex
Eastbourne's Past
Eastbourne is well recognised for being a chic coastal resort during the Edwardian era. However, this town in southern England has a much longer history. It is known that a Celtic community existed in Eastbourne and on the South Downs above the town as early as 500 BC. Due to the discovery of a particularly impressive villa, it is also believed that a Roman lord once resided here.
The name Eastbourne is derived from "Burne," a stream that once flowed through Motcombe Gardens. Later, "Burne" changed to "Bourne." In the 13th century, the name of the town was prefixed with "East" to distinguish it from neighbouring West Bourne.
Eastbourne was just a basic farming community at the time of the Norman conquest. It is reported that Eastbourne started to flourish when King Edward II visited in 1324. Three affluent Sussex families owned it by the middle of the 16th century.
Eastbourne was the scene of numerous sea battles beginning in the 17th century. Here, there was a great deal of upheaval when Napoleon Bonaparte appeared on the scene in the late 18th century. Along the coast, a number of Martello Towers were constructed as defences. A new fortification was constructed in 1805 to further strengthen the town's defences.
Eastbourne took a while to develop into a seaside destination. The railway arrived in Eastbourne in 1849, which is largely responsible for the city's popularity. The owners of the town at the time intended to develop the land at all costs. Their vision was realised in 1860, when a number of enhancements, including broad boulevards and streets as well as a promenade, were created. Later, the Meads, a proper urban drainage system, and Devonshire Park were added.
Shortly after the pier's opening in 1875, the Winter Garden debuted. The absence of any stores along the seafront was perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of these proposals. Eastbourne became a municipal borough in 1883. The new Town Hall opened only three years later. The town established the first motor bus company of its sort in the world when it started operating in 1903. Between the Old Town and the Eastbourne Railway Station, buses in Eastbourne ran.
Eastbourne received a large influx of refugees during the Second World War, but ultimately the town had to be evacuated due to the possibility of air raids. In fact, the town was hit by over 4,000 incendiary bombs throughout the conflict.
Eastbourne is still a well-known holiday destination today. It has also expanded recently to become a bustling conference and business centre.
