This production aims to emend passages strictly linked to the orchestral version, restoring them to their original pianistic conception. Furthermore the most important characteristic of the project is the use of original instruments. The end result is completely changed by the sound of the Erard pianos used by Rossini, a sound which is at the same time more brilliant and more intimate. With these instruments the need for a second piano to reinforce the first in certain registers is evident, while with a Steinway it is difficult to understand. The third instrument is even more intriguing; not harmonium but a harmonicorde, the instrument used at the first performance. It is a harmonium which is also provided with a single harp sounded by a striking action, as in a piano but without dampers, producing a magical sound which has been almost totally forgotten today.
The twenty-year-old experience of Giulio Prandi and his Coro Ghislieri with the repertoire of the eighteenth century will add a historical perspective to the sound of the vocal ensemble, from within which the four soloists will emerge as in Rossini's time. A fascinating rediscovery of an emblematic work of the Italian tradition, the true swan song of classical polyphony.
Giulio Prandi explains:
“The cast includes some of the brightest and most acclaimed voices in the world of Baroque and Bel Canto. The instruments used are the result of careful research into contemporary examples throughout the continent and are entrusted exclusively to absolute excellence. It is a very long and meticulous work of preparation before we even reach a single note. Almost thirty performances preceded this recording, in which I tried to give this splendid, strange opera a voice closer to the original. I hope that our work will give it new life and lead many others to understand and love it.”
“The Petite Messe Solennelle is an enigmatic and mysterious masterpiece. Perhaps it is only with this recording (which for the first time makes use of the new critical edition), wonderfully conducted by Giulio Prandi with the Ghislieri Choir and four top class singers, that we can truly understand the mysteries of the old Rossini, who winks at the opera theatre but from a now distanced perspective.”
