A former Post Office investigator has insisted that a Hebridean sub-postmaster was guilty of embezzlement, despite his conviction being quashed last year.
Raymond Grant, who now works for the Salvation Army, was giving evidence to the Post Office inquiry because he played a key role in the prosecution of Bill Quarm, of Paible, North Uist, who was found guilty in 2010 and served a community sentence.
The local postmaster and shopkeeper became “depressed and ashamed” and died two years later, aged 69, never knowing that his sentence would be overturned. Anne, his widow, said that he pleaded guilty only “to try to keep out of prison”.
