'한국 설 풍습 체험'…20개국 21개 재외한국문화원 다양한 행사
Korea is not alone in celebrating Seollal or the Lunar New year.
In tune with Hallyu, more countries are eager to experience the festivities by learning about the traditions of how it's celebrated.
Choi Min-jung sheds light on this phenomenon.
A holiday celebrated around the world.
To mark this Korean Lunar New Year,… Korean Cultural Centers in 20 countries hosted traditional activities,… to give foreigners the opportunity to experience the warmth and joy of Seollal.
In Indonesia, dozens of people gathered to compete in a traditional folk game tournament.
Indonesians enjoyed classic Korean games played during Seollal,... such as the traditional board game, yut nori,.... and the arrow throwing game, tuho.
They also sliced rice cakes,.... used to cook the traditional tteokguk rice cake soup that's eaten to mark the Korean New Year.
"Everyone is happy to be at the Seollal event because they're taking part in person for the first time in two years. There are lots of games and hands-on activities. We hope this will be a great opportunity to spread the Korean culture across Indonesia."
"I'm really excited because I get to know and learn so many things about Korean traditional culture. I got to experience Korean traditional games. Wearing this Hanbok for the first time."
Offline events were held in Japan as well,... as people were eager to experience Seollal in person.
Around a hundred people participated in ten events,... including tutorials for making accessories using Korean traditional materials.
One of the most popular activities was wearing hanbok, the Korean traditional dress.
"It was a very precious experience because we don't usually get to wear hanbok."
In Canada, the cultural center published a webtoon, introducing how Koreans honor their ancestors by preparing a table of food known as "charye".
They also hosted online classes,.. teaching participants how to make traditional crafts and do calligraphy.
“Canada is a very multi-cultural country. There are not only people from Korea but also those from other Asian countries like China, Vietnam and Japan. So, we believe it is crucial for us to show Canadians what the Lunar New Year holiday means to Koreans by showing how it’s different from other countries.”
Likewise, centers in other countries like Mexico, Egypt, and Germany,... also shared the spirit of Seollal.
