The Dolomites also known as the Dolomite Mountains, Dolomite Alps or Dolomitic Alps, are a mountain range located in northeastern Italy. They form part of the Southern Limestone Alps and extend from the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley (Pieve di Cadore) in the east. The Dolomites are located in the regions of Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and Friuli Venezia Giulia, covering an area shared between the provinces of Belluno, Vicenza, Verona, Trentino, South Tyrol, Udine and Pordenone.
Val Gardena is located in the heart of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of their uniqueness, their beauty and their incredible importance for humanity. You can detect right from the get go what’s so special about this valley when arriving in Selva Val Gardena, Ortisei or S. Cristina and know that you’re surrounded by these powerful, impressive mountains. Val Gardena stretches over 25 km and offers the perfect environment for an active holiday.
This is one of the most iconic churches in the entire Italian Dolomites region, though perhaps one of the smallest. This is the church of St. John in Ranui (or St. Johann, or San Giovanni, depending on which of the local languages you are reading). The small church of Ranui features a pitched roof covered with shingles, a three-sided choir and a bell tower standing at the north-eastern corner of the building, whose onion dome covered in copper is crowned by a star.
