This piece to me is very similar to "Spanish Romance" (also known as "Estudio en Mi de Rubira" (Study in E by Rubira), "Romance Anónimo", "Romance de España", "Romance of the Guitar", "Romanza" and "Romance d'Amour" among other names.)
It is for this reason that I always thought that both were from the same composer: Francisco Tarregá. For Spanish Romance this isn't a certainty but for this "Estudio en E minor" or "Study in E minor" there is no debate.
The study is more than a study to me. For some reason, within the chords, melody, and simplicity of the song, lies its strength and depth. I can imagine anyone playing this piece for a solid hour and never get bored playing it. Somewhere in those gently played notes my thoughts get lost and wanders off to a far away place leaving me in total peace. It is then when the heart starts whispering, finally enjoying the space that we have created for it.
For this very reason I have never experienced this as a study. To me this composition is a little gift to us guitarists and listeners alike. Maybe calling it "Estudio" was a practical joke from a gifted composer who - with a smile on his face - said: "I wonder if anyone would figure out this is my best piece".
Wishing you all a happy and blessed life,
André
