A review of Edgar Allan Poe's 1843 short story entitled "The Gold Bug". A man seems to go insane, after a skull magically appears on a piece of parchment. The madness leads to a strange trip to the woods, where he finds buried pirate treasure. Afterwards, the man gives a rational explanation of what just happened, in the style of a detective explaining a mystery.
The story heavily focuses on a cryptogram. The man goes into great detail, while explaining how he accomplished the seemingly impossible task of decoding a series of numbers and symbols. This story was the first major story to feature a cryptogram. Cryptograms and coded messages exploded in popularity, as a result of it.
I give this story a thumbs down, because it is racist.
