Tom Avis and Michael Steer were working nearby under the arches when they heard a huge explosion and saw a helicopter falling from the sky before crashing into the ground in Vauxhall, south London.
Mr Avis said they heard a "big bang" and looked up to see the
helicopter coming down after it hit a crane on top of the as-yet
unoccupied 185-metre high cylindrical block - The Tower, One St
George Wharf.
The craft spun out of control, fell to the ground and burst into
flames, setting nearby buildings alight.
Wreckage was strewn across roads close to Vauxhall train station, a
major transport hub near the south bank of the River Thames, which was
packed with thousands of commuters at the time of the incident
shortly.
Two people, including the pilot, died at the scene with at least nine
casualties, including one person critically ill with others suffering
minor injuries, police have reported.
