Overcoming hearing loss was something Tom K. never thought he’d have to do, but somewhere along the line, he began straining to hear. He went into hearing aids in 1992, and they helped immensely until a couple of years ago. He began to feel isolated, and he found himself withdrawing from social groups. And, it started to worsen.
His hearing loss eventually progressed to the point where he was hearing but not understanding. As a coping mechanism for hearing loss, he used the words "huh, what, please," and if that didn't work, then he guessed or pretended. He could see people's frustration, and that was genuine on their part. That's a normal response to somebody with hearing loss.
It all culminated when he started having trouble hearing and understanding his two grandchildren, because he'd miss words in a sentence. He'd look into their loving eyes and faces, and they were as frustrated as he was. They eventually pulled away and stopped talking to him as much, and that was something he could not tolerate.
Getting the Cochlear™ Nucleus® Implant System was a life-changer for Tom. His audiologist calls him a “rocket patient,” because his sentence recognition has greatly improved, near the top of the charts. It’s been a return to a life he knew, but lost and regained. He got himself and his interaction with others back, and he wouldn’t trade that for anything.
